Everton Park is a small suburb located just under 8km north-west of Brisbane’s central business district in Queenland, Australia. The coordinates of Everton Park are 27°25′13″S 153°02′46″E. It is designated an official postcode of 4053 and is located in the Brisbane Time Zone (UTC+10:00). Although it does not contain a local or council government area, it neighbours Wavell Heights and Stafford in the City of Brisbane local government area (LGA).
Mostly residential, Everton Park also contains plenty of commercial areas – institutions such as shopping malls and sporting fields can be found within its boundaries. Additionally, there are multiple parks scattered throughout the suburb – both Ryan’s and Kelly’s Paddock parks are popular spots for families to gather over weekend barbeques and birthday parties. Surrounding suburbs include Wilston, Enoggera, McDowall and Stafford Heights.
The suburb of Everton is named after the Everton Park Estate which itself was named after Everton, a district within Liverpool, England. The estate comprised of land owned by pioneers William James McDowall and Ambrose McDowell since the late 1800s. During this time, the local area was known as Bunyaville with a Baptist church established in 1932 on land donated by Arthur Timms. The church, which can still be seen today, was remarkable in its construction as it only took one day to build with assistance from Newmarket Baptist Church.
The heritage of Everton can still be seen today as elements such as Bunyaville Church are prominent cultural landmarks for locals living in the area. While it has been past 200 years since settlement first began in Everton Park, people can revel in both new infrastructures such as shopping centres and cafes alongside historical gems like churches and stone cottages that pay tribute to the pioneering spirit that once lived around here. It is precisely this combination between old and new that begins to tell an exciting story about Everton’s past while looking towards an increasingly vibrant future.
