Ascot
Ascot is a small suburban area located in Queensland, Australia. It is situated just 6 kilometers from the city of Brisbane, the state capital. The coordinates of Ascot are 27°25′20″S 153°00′53″E and its postcode is 4007.
Ascot lies in the Australian Eastern Standard Time zone (AEST) and it is part of the City of Brisbane local government area (LGA). There are several parks and recreational areas within Ascot such as Racecourse Park and Hart Field Park, making this a great suburb for outdoor activities. You can also find a golf course in the nearby locality of Hamilton. Additionally, Ascot has a few schools such as Ascot State School, St Margaret’s Anglican Girls School, St Rita’s College, Aviation High and others.
The suburb is well serviced by bus routes with three route numbers along Lancaster Road: 300; 302; and 307 which all operate at regular intervals throughout the day. The area which is now known as Ascot was originally inhabited by the Aboriginal Turrbal clan, who referred to it as Yowoggerra. They used the land for camping grounds, with a corroboree place being located on the north side.
In the 1830s, convicts were shipped in to clear parts of the land, as well as build basic roads. These convict workers assisted in establishing a firm foundation of infrastructure, allowing wealthier free settlers to purchase stretches of land overlooking the Brisbane River within just a decade’s time. After this point, pastoralist James Sutherland bought most of the land in 1855 and established his cattle station stretching from Hamilton through to Ascot. The area subsequently became home to many pioneers of early Brisbane and helped boost Australia’s economy through its production of medicine for distillation and dyes for tanning hides.
